The French police have arrested two suspects in relation to the major jewel heist that occurred at the Louvre on October 19.
On Sunday, Laure Beccuau, a French prosecutor, released a statement announcing that two suspects were arrested by the authorities. News reports further detailed that both arrests occurred at 10 pm. One of the suspects was allegedly boarding a flight to Algeria when he was apprehended at the Charles de Gaulle Airport. Authorities have not revealed the names of the suspects, only that they were both in their 30s and hailed from the Seine-Saint-Denis area of Paris. The arrest follows the recent announcement by the French police, who stated that they were following leads from a newly surfaced video that showed two thieves escaping the museum with the jewellery.

On Sunday, thieves broke into the Louvre and stole jewels of incalculable value in one of the most brazen art thefts in modern history. The museum later confirmed that the eight stolen jewels, including those belonging to Napoleon, were worth $102 million. The heist, now dubbed “heist of the century”, also comes as a major embarrassment to the Emmanuel Macron government. Subsequent reports revealed that the many corners of the Louvre were not under surveillance, as well as that the stolen jewels were not insured and, if not recovered, the country would not be reimbursed for the loss. Laurence des Cars, director of the museum, had previously submitted her resignation (which was not accepted by the French culture ministry).
