“Devil Wears Prada” Heads To Auction At Christie’s

Like the original, the “Devil Wears Prada” sequel is again auctioning its costumes, this time at Christie’s.

Being very on-brand with the “Devil Wears Prada” sass, the auction is titled “A Million Girls Would Kill For These Things“. The auction is scheduled between September 1 and 15 at Christie’s New York, coinciding with New York Fashion Week. The 20 lots would include costumes from both the original film as well as its sequel. All proceeds from the auction would go towards the Committee to Protect Journalists and the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

The dress worn by Lady Gaga

The catalog of the auction includes the blue sweater worn by Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway’s character) in the original film. There is a Dries Van Noten tassel jacket worn by Miranda Pristley (Meryl Streep’s character) and another Schiaparelli jacket – both carrying an estimate between $4000-$6000. There is a Gabriela Hearst patchwork dress, along with the stain from food spilled over it in the movie, up for the block. Beyond Streep and Hathaway, there is also a hooded black velvet and feathered dress worn by Lady Gaga in the sequel, which might fetch between $15,000-$20,000.

This is not the first time that the movie is taking the auction route. In 2006, when “Devil Wears Prada” was released, it was Streep who suggested auctioning off some of the costumes for Dress For Success. The scale was much smaller and took place entirely on eBay (which was the biggest online marketplace at the time). Among the auctioned off costumes was a Valentino silk chiffon blouse, a Prada dress, and a Bill Blass suit. However, many of the costumes were not auctioned, including a vintage green coat worn by Hathaway’s character. It was bought earlier by Hathaway’s then-boyfriend as a gift to her.
