After Ditching LACMA, Ahmanson Foundation Partners With Huntington

More than a year after ending its partnership with the LACMA in 2020, the prominent Ahmanson Foundation has now joined hands with the Huntington institute.

The Huntington Library, Art Museums, and Botanical Gardens are located in San Marino, California. On Monday, the institute announced that the Ahmanson Foundation will start gifting the museum with artworks, as well as aid them in the purchase of new works. Portrait Falls on the Genesee (1839) by Thomas Cole is the first artwork gifted by the foundation. Karen R. Lawrence (President, Huntington) said that the new partnership will be “absolutely transformative” for the institute.

Previously, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art had a long-term partnership with the Ahmanson Foundation, starting from the 1970s. The partnership allows the LACMA to transform itself and add prominent works to its collection.  The foundation also aided LACMA in other ventures like educational and environmental programs. However, the relationship strained in 2020 when LACMA announced its renovation plans. One of the issues was renaming the Ahmanson building after music mogul David Geffen, who had donated $150 million to the renovation plans. LACMA had also announced to remove many of the works gifted by the foundation to be removed from public view. The partnership officially ended in March 2020.

Ahmanson Foundation had been on a hunt for a new partner ever since. “The Huntington is a museum that continues to be good stewards of its permanent collection, but also has the capacity and desire to strengthen their collection.”, said William Ahmanson (President, Ahmanson Foundation). With the foundation’s aide, Huntington aims to buy more 15th-20th century artworks for its collection.
