Bad Bunny Faces Backlash From Mexico After ‘Touching’ Ancient Artifact

Singer Bad Bunny is facing criticism from Mexican authorities after allegedly touching an ancient Mayan stone.

Bad Bunny, real name Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is a Puerto Rican singer and rapper. Reportedly, the singer posted a picture on his Instagram handle showing a hooded person touching an object. The ‘object’ was identified as an artifact at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. More specifically, it was a stela, a carved stone sculpture that held religious significance in the Mayan culture.

The picture attracted backlash from some commentators, which led the media to cover the news. Then, on Saturday, the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) issued a public condemnation of the music artist for the act. The statement said: “As it is public knowledge, physical contact with archaeological property is prohibited. […] When the artist placed his hand on the stela, museum security reiterated that the pieces could not be touched,” also mentioning that the singer was repeatedly asked to refrain from touching the objects but continued to do so anyway.

Despite the condemnation, the INAH or the museum did not hint at barring the singer from revisiting. Bad Bunny did not comment on the situation so far, neither to apologize nor to deny. However, the Instagram post in question has since been deleted. Bad Bunny was also at the center of another controversy recently after his half-time performance at the upcoming SuperBowl was announced. Many people questioned his eligibility as an “American” to perform at the event, especially in light of his criticism of US President Donald Trump.
