Baxter St Receives $1M Grant From The Mellon Foundation

Baxter St at the Camera Club of New York is the recipient of a $1 million grant, over 3 years, from the Mellon Foundation.

The massive grant would be spread over 3 years, though the exact structure has not been revealed. The funds would be spent on expanding the capacity of the space and bringing in more staff. The organization plans to go through a one-time staff restructuring to build a more robust staff. It also plans to rope in a community outreach manager to build stronger ties with the local community. Another important goal would be to expand the space to accommodate more emerging and underrated artists in the locality.

The Camera Club of New York, one of the most integral arts spaces in the city, was founded in 1884. Their Project Space has been an important platform to host exhibitions and workshops by emerging artists. This year, it will celebrate the 140th anniversary of its founding as well as its 10th anniversary at the new location in Baxter St. To celebrate this, the organization plans a series of community engagement events over the next few weeks, including free admission on May 11. The grant would allow Baxter St to organize these events at a grander scale and without operational difficulties.
