BAYC Reach Settlement With Ryder Ripps Over Copyright

The long legal battle between Bored Ape Yacht Club and artist Ryder Ripps over copyright infringement has reached a settlement outside the court.

The news broke on Tuesday, when Yuga Labs, the company behind BAYC, announced that they have reached a settlement with Ripps and his partner, Jeremy Cahen. The terms of the settlement, including any financial reimbursement, were not revealed. However, the company did reveal that there is a permanent injunction against both Ripps and Cahen, preventing either from using BAYC in either name or art.

In 2022, the BAYC was launched at the height of NFT mania. The digital artworks, which featured images of apes in various avatars, instantly became popular and drew massive numbers from buyers. Around the same time, artist Ryder Ripps made allegations that the BAYC series is filled with racist imagery. He also claimed that some images, like the one with a Prussian hat, used symbols associated with the alt-right movement. Furthermore, he alleged that the white skull NFT closely resembles the Nazi Totenkopf emblem. Yuga Labs categorically denied all allegations, but did not take any action against him at the time.
