Five More Suspects Arrested Regarding Louvre Heist Of The Century

The Paris police have arrested five more suspects while investigating the Louvre heist, where jewelry worth $102 million was stolen.

On Thursday, Laure Beccuau – the Paris prosecutor overseeing the investigation – said that five suspects were detained on Wednesday night. The arrests were made through coordinated raids in Paris and neighbouring suburbs. According to Beccuau, one of the suspects was identified by the DNA trace found at the crime scene. However, it is not clear what the evidence was against the other four.

So far, seven people have been detained in relation to the Louvre heist, dubbed as the ‘heist of the century‘. Previously, two suspects were detained on Saturday night by the Paris police. One of the suspects was reportedly trying to board a flight to Algeria. So far, the authorities have not shared much details on the detained suspects, except that the first two suspects were in their 30s and belonged to the Seine-Saint-Denis area of Paris. Nothing has been revealed about the five new detainees. However, police did reveal that the recovered mobile phones helped their investigation, as well as the recently discovered CCTV footage of two theives in yellow attire.

On the morning of October 19, four masked thieves entered the Apollo Gallery at the Louvre and escaped with 9 pieces of jewelry belonging to Emperor Napoleon. While one of the jewels fell during the escape, the remaining jewels are yet to be recovered. Combined, they are estimated to be worth $102 million. Authorities have said they are keeping a watch over the black market in case the suspects tried to sell the loot there.
