The authorities have closed the iconic Groucho Club in London after a ‘serious crime’ occurred on its premises.
On Tuesday, the Westminster City Council revealed that the club’s license had been revoked for 4 weeks. This happened at the request of the Metropolitan Police who has been investigating the premises. No details about the exact nature of the crime have been made public. A hearing on December 24th will decide whether to return the license to the club. The city council said in a statement: “This decision follows reports that a serious crime may have taken place at the premises in circumstances linked to a breach in the premise’s licensing conditions. The allegations are subject to an ongoing police investigation and we cannot comment further at this stage.”

The Groucho Club is one of the most iconic establishments in the city of London. Opened in 1985, it was named after the comedian Groucho Marx. It found fame after numerous celebrities – particularly from the entertainment industry – became members of the club. Some notable members include Harry Styles, Stephen Fry, Rachel Weisz, and Cara Delevingne. However, since the 2010s, the club started going downhill. It was first sold in 2006 and then again in 2015. In 2022, it was bought by Artfarm for $50 million. Created in 2014, Artfarm is a subsidiary of Hauser & Wirth created by dealers Iwan and Manuela Wirth. Unlike other subsidiaries of Hauser & Wirth, Artfarm operates independently of its parent company. Artfarm has not issued any statement regarding the incident.
