Hauser & Wirth Announces New Space In SoHo, Third One In New York

Continuing the trend of recent expansions, Hauser & Wirth has announced a new space in SoHo, its third one in New York alone.

The mega gallery has announced that its new space in the iconic SoHo neighborhood, a bustling hub of art in New York. The gallery, which will open at a former Gagosian Gallery space, will open at 134 Wooster. The gallery sprawls across 4000 sqft of space and has a ceiling height of 16.5 feet. Staying true to tradition, the gallery will not alter the core architecture of the building (which was originally a truck garage a century ago).

Hauser & Wirth has been continuously spreading across the globe and increasing its presence over the past few months. Outside the US, the mega gallery has a presence in the United Kingdom, Spain, Switzerland, Monaco, and Hong Kong. Within New York, it will be its third space, after Upper East Side and Chelsea. In February itself, Hauser & Wirth opened a new space in Los Angeles; located in West Hollywood, it was the gallery’s second space in the city. In the Fall of this year, the gallery will open its first space in Paris.

Marc Payot (President, Hauser & Wirth) said that they did not actively plan to open a space in SoHo; it’s just that space became available. “SoHo is definitely not the place where galleries are—there are really only very few.” The new space will also work slightly differently from other spaces of the gallery; the exhibitions will be longer and undergo fewer rotations. As per Payot, since SoHo is not a bustling art hub, they want to use the new gallery as a platform to give artists better exposure.
