Marlborough Gallery’s Chelsea Space Hits Market At $10.9M

The former New York residence of Marlborough Gallery has been listed for $10.9 million in the market.

The once-iconic Marlborough Gallery was housed on the 1st and 2nd floors of the Chelsea Art Towers, located at 545 West 25th Street. The sale, which will be handled by Brown Harris Stevens, is expected to surpass its listed price. And for good reason; the space boasts high ceilings and a spacious terrace on the 2nd floor. It also boasts curb-cut access, a street-level garage door, and flexible zoning.

Once sold, it might serve as the closing chapter on the rise and fall of one of the most iconic galleries in New York. In 2024, Marlborough Gallery announced that it would be closing its doors after 80 years. The gallery’s London space was also listed for $32 million in September of last year. The gallery had promised that a portion of funds from the liquidation process would go towards art charities, though thus far, it has not disclosed any figures or names of the charities. It must be noted that the art collection of the museum is estimated to be worth more than $250 million.

Unlike a crash, the fall of the Marlborough Gallery – which opened in 1946 – had been slow and painful. A power struggle for control between the members of the family that owned it spanned decades. As such, the museum lacked any real leadership or direction. This was most evident when the museum announced plans to consolidate its Chelsea and Midtown locations in 2019, only for the plans to be cancelled by internal arguments.
