Speculated Goya Work To Appear At 2028 Museo del Prado

A painting, widely speculated to be by Francisco de Goya, will feature at the 2028 Museo del Prado show.

The painting, El milagro de la aparición del eucaristo al San Pascual Bailón (The miracle of the appearance of the Eucharist to Saint Paschal Baylón), was purchased by Barcelona-based gallerist Artur Ramon at an auction in Madrid in 2018. At the time, it was attributed to Francisco Bayeu, Goya’s brother-in-law.

However, Ramon began questioning the attribution after displaying the painting in his home during the pandemic in 2020. The prolonged period spent with the work led him to suspect that it could instead be an early work by Goya.

The Spanish Ministry of Culture has also indicated that the painting could be an unknown work by the artist. In a statement, it said, “in the absence of a more in-depth study and verification from various specialists, everything seems to indicate that this is an unknown work of Francisco de Goya from around 1780.”

The Prado has confirmed that the painting will be included in its planned 2028 Goya exhibition. However, the exhibition will also provide an opportunity for experts to examine the work before its authorship is formally established.
