Mugshots And Blunts: Snoop Dogg Collection Is An Auction Hit

A collection of artworks by the American rapper Snoop Dogg, prominently featuring smoked blunts, sold for $148,100.
Titled “Ashes to Art“, the collection was all about works made by artist Snoop Dogg himself. Each work was sort of a composite of different items, all related to Snoop’s life, coated in clear epoxy and (interestingly) a layer of marijuana resin. The whole thing was then framed in an acrylic box. All seven works in the collection were made this way.
The auction had set up a starting price of $9,000 for each work. Each work ended up being sold. However, the highlight of the evening was Snoop Doggy Dogg Genesis Burn, which featured a signed-and-burned copy of the artist’s 1993 mugshot. It also featured a half-smoked blunt. The mugshot was taken when Snoop Dogg was arrested in relation to a drive-by shooting; he was later placed under house arrest before being acquitted in 1996. The work ended up fetching a $70,000, accounting for almost half of the night’s total revenue.

The remaining works fetched decent prices themselves. Doggystyle Decoded, a work featuring the original CD from the album of the same name, a metal ashtray, and a smoked blunt, was sold for $16,500. All works were created in a collaboration between Snoop Dogg and artist-entrepreneur Erica Kovitz.
