Georgia James Tavern is Underbelly’s Latest Star on the Houston Restaurant Scene

The restaurant makes high-end food accessible in its Market Square Tower location.

An exciting new announcement has Houston foodies buzzing in anticipation, as famed Underbelly Hospitality group and James Beard award winning Chef Chris Shepard revealed their latest restaurant concept, Georgia James Tavern. The restaurant is set to open this summer as the group’s first foray into the Downtown Houston scene, and residents of Market Square Tower will be able to enjoy the world-class experience at the tip of their fingers, easily accessed in the downstairs of the building.

The eatery has found its home in Market Square Tower, a Class-A residential complex renowned for providing top of the line amenities to its community. In line with the building’s reputation for stellar service, George James Tavern’s aim for excellence is set to be a more than welcome fit to the residency.

“Market Square is a prime location,” said the restaurant’s Chef de cuisine Matt “Tally” Coburn. “I look forward to opening a restaurant downtown that has something on the menu for almost everybody — to open a restaurant that people want to visit more than once a week.”

“I hope to build a sense of community with our guests downtown and create a culture that everybody wants to be a part of,” continued Coburn. “To create a sense of family not just with our guests but with our staff, too.

Coburn was once the former sous chef at Georgia James, Underbelly’s lauded Houston steakhouse, and now aims to bring the restaurant’s quality cuisine into its new and more accessible offshoot at Market Square Tower.

Between a whiskey-led cocktail menu and a bevy of wood-fired entrée options, Georgia James Tavern has something to offer all of its diners, readily succeeding at providing elevated twists on classic dishes. The juicy Tavern Ribeye is sure to please all Georgia James fans, alongside burgers, club sandwiches, and lobster rolls, while an array of bright salads give options for more veggie-focused patrons.

“The menu at the Tavern will feature ingredients from many local farms and ranches that I have had the opportunity to build relationships with over my 5 years in Houston,” said Coburn. “The menu is made up of food that I love to cook and that represents me, as well as the ethos of Underbelly and the Tavern’s namesake, Georgia James steakhouse.”

Georgia James Tavern is gearing up to open to the public this very summer, and is sure to delight awaiting Houstonians with its mouth watering cuisine.
