Gladstone Gallery To Represent Late Lawrence Weiner

Gladstone Gallery has secured rights to represent the estate of the late artist Lawrence Weiner in New York.

Lawrence Weiner was born in 1942 in New York. After traveling throughout North America, he returned to New York – which would remain his base for the rest of his life. A student of Abstract Expressionism, Weiner soon came to be known as the founding father of the Conceptual Art sub-genre, a highly influential art movement of the 1960s and 70s. His work influenced the likes of Robert Barry and Sol LeWitt. He died in December 2021, at the age of 79.

ON VIEW Regen Projects (2020)

Perhaps Lawrence Weiner is best known for his use of text and linguistics as an art form. He also firmly believed in creating art that the viewer could interact with. For instance, his A 36″ X 36″ REMOVAL TO THE LATHING OR SUPPORT WALL OF PLASTER OR WALLBOARD FROM A WALL (1968) did exactly what the title suggested: removing the specified dimension of a portion from the wall on which it was displayed.

Speaking on representing Weiner, Barbara Gladstone (owner of the gallery) said: “I feel incredibly grateful for this opportunity to work alongside the estate of Lawrence Weiner. He proposed a radically new relationship to art through his exploration of language as a sculptural medium. Representing the estate is a dream come true.”
