In recent years, the career of Painter Ed Clark has taken a turn for the better and it is still continuing. Now, Hauser & Wirth have made an announcement that they will now represent the painter worldwide. Apart from that, Hauser & Wirth have also announced that the first show of Ed Clark will be held in September at Hauser & Wirth’s Chelsea location in New York.
Detroit-based Ed Clark has now turned 93 years of age this year. Ed made his name in the field of painting with the help of pictures of free-flowing colour made by pushing paint with a broom. Also, Ed is credited as being the first artist from America who showed a shaped canvas back in 1957.
In September, Ed Clark’s first show will focus on showing his works from 2000 to present. “The recent work is incredibly free and radical. With the show in New York, we want to really activate the museums, the curators, the critical thinking, to work toward a strong institutional presence,” says Marc Payot who is a partner and vice president of Hauser & Wirth.
The move by Hauser & Wirth comes as no surprise to someone who has followed the gallery very closely in recent times. Because Hauser & Wirth have added 24 new artists between the duration of January 2016 to May 2019. Along with Hauser & Wirth, other galleries have also started adding artists at a rapid pace in recent times which shows a positive trend in the industry.
One of Ed’s prominent works, “Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power 1963–1983,” is currently at the Broad museum in Los Angeles. And it also has to be said that Clark’s prominence has grown in stature in recent times and it is also because of his works entering major institutional collections. David Hammons who is a curator at Hauser & Wirth curated one of Ed Clark’s outings in 2014 too.
