#ArtOnLink, a program launched in 2017 by LinkNYC, has been making its mark on the streetscapes of New York, showcasing local artists’ work on a metropolitan scale. With the expansion of the program in 2018 with LinkNWK and LinkPHL, the positive reception and enthusiastic participation have exceeded expectations. The initiative has become a defining feature of New York City’s streetscapes, providing a platform for artists to showcase their work, give citygoers unique perspectives of their city, and make a positive impact on their communities while offering free Wi-Fi to millions of New Yorkers and visitors.
Recently, a watercolor and gouache illustration series called “The City as Backdrop” was displayed on every LinkNYC kiosk from January 31 to February 15, 2023. Yishi Deng, a talented artist and New York-based multi-disciplinary artist, created the captivating series. The series captures the aesthetic allure of New York City and its people, showcasing the city’s unique architecture, energy, and diversity. Deng used warm and vibrant hues to create depth and texture in her artwork, drawing on her nine years of living in the city. Her series highlights the excitement and joy brought by visitors and the energy and vibrancy that make New York City so unique.
Deng said, “I hope that people see the beauty in the city that I see. I hope that the illustrations allow people to pause and reflect on the stunning backdrop of New York City and all that it has to offer. I also hope that visitors to the city will see the energy and vibrancy that make New York City so unique.”
The #ArtOnLink selection process is competitive, and the program has become a powerful tool for artists to share their creativity. Paola Delucca, a Puerto Rican designer and illustrator based in Brooklyn, was also among the participating artists, showcasing her art, including her creation “The Lovers,” which captures the romanticism and mystique of New York City’s subway system. The artwork is a tribute to the diverse range of people who use the subway system and has resonated with many who appreciate the unique experience of being a New Yorker.
The program has become a powerful platform for artists to connect with their communities, express themselves, and make a meaningful impact on the world around them. Participating artists have various reasons, including creating moments of connection, brightening someone’s day, sharing their unique perspectives, reaching new audiences, and putting more art out into the world. The selected artwork captures the essence of New York City and represents the program’s mission and vision. #ArtOnLink has truly become a defining feature of New York City’s streetscapes, bringing more art and beauty to the city while providing a platform for local artists to showcase their work.
