A museum dedicated to AI art is now a reality, as Refik Anadol’s DATALAND gears up to open in Los Angeles on June 20.
DATALAND will be a state-of-the-art, futuristic home (the first of its kind, actually) to AI art or Generative AI art. Located in downtown LA, the museum is designed by none other than Frank Gehry. DATALAND will feature five gallery spaces spread across a massive 25,000 square feet. An additional 10,000 square feet is set aside for the hardware that would run the massive space and exhibit the digital art.
The brains behind DATALAND is Refik Anadol, one of the prominent names in digital art. He and the museum’s co-founder, Efsun Erkılıç, first founded a digital art studio in LA in 2014. Anadol made news in 2022 with Underpervised, a GenAI art installation at the Museum of Modern Art that went viral.
DATALAND is an extension of that idea. First announced in 2024, it will finally open at the Grand LA on 20th June. The first exhibition there would be Anadol’s own: “Machine Dreams: Rainforest“. The project uses an AI model extensively trained over ecological datasets and thus capable of understanding the intricacies of the natural world. Another project on display would be “Infinity Room“, Anadol’s spin on Yayoi Kusama’s famous installation that would recreate the world of a now-extinct Hawaiian bird species.

Speaking on the upcoming museum, Anadol said: “LA is the center of creativity. It is a city that defines the future of art, music, cinema, architecture, and more, and we can’t wait to open DATALAND’s flagship location in our adopted home.” The first exhibition will be on display until January 31st, 2027.
