Brusells Edition of Art Fair discontinued by Independent

We have seen art fairs being held in various parts of the world. However, there are also announcements where Art fairs are being discontinued as well. We have one such announcement from Independent which is known for organizing various art fairs. Independent has revealed that they are discontinuing the satellite edition of Brusells which was first held in 2016.

The reason for discontinuing the fair has also been revealed by Independent. Elizabeth Dee, a co-founder of the fair, said in a statement that the decision to close down Independent Brussels owed to “not finding the optimal moment or venue.” This is because the Independent Brusells Art fair was first clashing with the Art Brusells in Spring which is generally organized in November every year. This caused the organizers to shift the dates to which then made them clash with the Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair in China.

Therefore, we can also say that the tight schedule of Art fair caused Independent to take the decision of discontinuing the Brusells edition. However, this can also be seen as a blow to Elizabeth Dee who closed her own gallery last year in New York. This was after being in operation for 17 hours as the gallery was first opened in 2001. At that time, Dee said that “Now I can fully commit to the fair.”

Elizabeth Dee, however, says that the New York edition of Independent Art Fair still remains to be a ‘strong draw’ as the atmosphere is cosy and clubby. She says that “Some 25 per cent of the world’s collectors live in New York, and our team, our museum-calibre building, and my own professional transition means we’re now in a position to grow”. The New York edition of Independent Art Fair is being held at the TriBeCa at Spring Studios. This year’s edition of the fair saw seven floors filled with art from more than 60 galleries.
