Queen Elizabeth II Statue Unveiled In England, The First Since Her Death

The first statue of former Queen Elizabeth II since her death in 2022 was unveiled in Oakham, England.

The seven-foot bronze statue is designed by Hywel Pratley. The statue shows the queen, depicted in her later years, wearing grand robes and playing with three corgis at her feet. At the unveiling, many people visited the venue with their own dogs. The approximate $177,000 price tag of the statue was met via public fundraisers.

Almost one and half years after her death, Britain has started memorializing its longest-serving monarch. A statue by Andy Edwards, depicting a smiling Queen Elizabeth II holding flowers, would be unveiled at Newcastle-under-Lynn. Amy Goodman has also finished two sculptures of the late queen, one of which might be installed at a national memorial that might be instituted in her memory.

Queen Elizabeth II was the head of the British monarchy from 1952 until her death in September 2022 at the age of 96. During her long tenure, she navigated through the rapidly changing world and the diminishing role of the monarchy. After her death, her son took over the throne as King Charles III. While many people criticized the continued existence of monarchy in the modern world, many others – particularly in the UK – remember her fondly.

Speaking about her statue in Oakham, local representative Sarah Furness said: “What most of us remember about Queen Elizabeth is her warmth. By showing Queen Elizabeth’s love of dogs, we show her humanity.”
