Known for his intricate brushwork, Italian artist Guido Rocca has taken the next step forward as he debuted his grand artworks at Area35 in Milan.
Guido Rocca presented a host of his works on June 22 at the Area35 gallery in Milan, Italy. While the exhibition featured an array of his works – both small and large – one work in particular captured everyone’s attention. Rocca debuted a 6m x 2m painting, his largest work ever. The grand work of art, placed at the center of the gallery, rightfully became a center of attraction from the moment the exhibition opened.
The entire work is an eruption of hues. Hundreds of colors are transformed by thousands of brushstrokes until the end result is no longer any individual color, but like a festival of the entire visible spectrum. But it is not just the blend of colors that truly makes the work special; it is the way those colors stay on the canvas. Guido Rocca employed his marvelous skills to make the color physically pop out of the canvas. The end result is not a two-dimensional painting, but almost a three-dimensional embodiment of everything that makes our lives colorful.
This is not the first time Guido Rocca had a tryst with Area35. In December of last year, Rocca debuted at the gallery with a room dedicated to his abstract artworks. The works were in the same vein as his usual style: an abstract explosion of colors. The whole room seems to be in a midst of a celebratory event as vibrant hues surrounded the audience. There, too, Rocca employed his signature style of building paints over canvas which leaves a 3-D effect. At the time, the exhibition was a hit and praised by the viewers.
Guido Rocca was born in Milan in 1983. He has lived, in his own words, ‘a crazy life’. Struggling with drug addiction for years, Rocca finally came on the other side. And what he found there was a passion for art. Since then, he has been advocating against drug abuse and trying to help people through his art. He says that while he understands why creative people might think drugs are the key to their creativity, it is far from true. He believes that the imagination of an artist is all he needs to visualize the art he wants to create.

But why decide to go big with his work? Rocca has an answer: “This exhibition was born from an intense personal need to transform a period of great emotional confusion into some aesthetic work. Thanks to art, I found the creative means to not repress my inner universe but rather become aware of it, observe it, and express it. It was a long journey, dark and enlightening, full of getting lost and finding oneself, creating disorder to bring order. The thousands of brushstrokes on the canvas are nothing but the steps of the path I forged for myself. I hope that this process of awareness will be felt by those too who observe my paintings.”
