Longtime Santa Fe house of late actor Gene Hackman is now listed in the market with a starting bid of $6.25 million.
The 13,000-square-foot property is located on the hilltop of a secluded, gated locality in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The compound is surrounded by piñon trees and enveloped by the unobstructed sky, while also offering views of the Jemez Mountains. The property is listed with Sotheby’s International Realty.

Gene Hackman purchased the property in the 1990s. It was a controversial choice at the time, particularly because the property was built in the 1950s and neglected for many years, but also because of how secluded it was from Hollywood’s glitz. However, Hackman was drawn precisely towards these qualities. He joined forces with architects Stephen Samuelson and Harry Dapples to convert this neglected architecture into a home customized for the couple. Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakwa, lived there ever since.
The property was restructured to reduce sections and give way to more space. The house had a central hall with a hearth that connected to almost every other room in the residence. Instead of a shiny finish, the actor went with layered patinas and mixed colors himself. The house featured large living and dining halls, a library, an office, a suite, and even amenities like a gym and a gaming area on the lower level. There was also a separate guesthouse with 3 bedrooms and a separate art studio for Hackman.

Gene Hackman and his wife were found dead at this residence in February 2025, though their deaths were later ruled natural. Their deaths might have stigmatized the value of the property, though the allure of Hackman’s star status might counteract it.
