Tokyo Gendai has revealed the list of 63 exhibitors for the upcoming edition of the event in September.
Like each year, the art fair will feature the three flagship sections: Galleries, Hana (“Flower”), and Eda (“Branch). The Tane (“Seed”) section will also return after being introduced last year. Furthermore, another section called Miki (“Trunk”) will be inaugurated this year. In total, 63 exhibitors will be displayed across five sections, slightly lower than last year’s number of 66.
Apart from the lower count, the introduction of a new section meant the composition of each section would also be significantly different from the previous year. “Galleries”, the main event section of Tokyo Gendai, will only have 17 galleries (compared to 29 last year). Participants include Pace Gallery, A Lighthouse called Kanata, and Mizuma Art Gallery. Some prominent names from last year, like Almine Rech, are not returning this time.
Meanwhile, the Hana (“Flower”) section will see a bump this year, representing nearly half of the total exhibitors, including both local galleries like AWASE Gallery and international names like Palma de Mallorca (Spain) and Lett Thomas (New Zealand). The Tane (“Seed”) section, introduced last year, focuses on works in digital media, including animation, digital art, NFTs and gaming. It will showcase five exhibitors, including TAEX.

The inaugural section of Miki (“Trunk”) will focus on projects on paper and photography. Exhibitors include Bangkok CityCity Gallery and Revolver Galeria. Tokyo Gendai was established to galvanize cross-cultural exchange, and to welcome international audiences to experience the breadth and the exceptional quality of contemporary art in Japan; we look forward to continuing in this mission with our dynamic fourth edition.”
