The Museum of Modern Art, New York will host a major career retro of late German-American artist Eva Hesse next year.
Titled “Eva Hesse: Wild Space, 1957-1970,” the first major show of the artist in the US in over two decades, the exhibition will cover the prime of her career. With over 150 works on the menu, the show will be exhibited from May 30–September 25, 2027.
The last time Eva Hesse had a major show in the country was in 2002, when the San Francisco MoMA held a retrospective for her. The upcoming exhibition will be curated by Lanka Tattersall. Speaking of the show, she said: “My sense is that there are generations of artists in New York City and beyond who may have read about Hesse’s work, or seen a sculpture here or there, but haven’t had a chance to think about the cross-pollination between her works on paper and her sculptures. Her approach to experimental freedom can encourage future generations of artists to experiment with their materials, with their forms, and to grapple with the question of what it means to be an artist in society.”

Eva Hesse was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1936 and fled to New York in 1938 due to the Nazi persecution. Her short career is known for challenging the boundaries of Minimalism. She died in 1970, at a young age of 34, due to a brain tumor.
