The 2024 edition of the Met Gala, held yesterday, lacked the wow factor it is known for.
The Met Gala is an annual event held on the first Monday of May. It was established in 1995 as a way to support the Costume Institute under the Metropolitan Museum of Art. However, thanks to the efforts of Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, the event has become a major part of pop culture. Despite the invite-only rule and tickets costing up to $50,000, each year celebrities line up to attend the event.
As such, the event was overrun by floral patterns. This includes Zendaya, who has been a center of attraction in the past few editions. Others like Dan Levy, Taylor Russell, and Ayo Edibiri followed suit. Few, like Mindy Kaling and Sarah Jessica Parker, pleasantly chose to focus on the temporal aspect of the theme. However, the overall event was still deemed “boring” and “confusing” by many on social media. A theme about florals (albeit incorrectly) always tends to be cliché, which seemed to be the issue with this year’s Met Gala. The usual complaint about too many men choosing to wear regular formal attire was present this year as well.

The event occurred alongside the exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion“. The exhibition featured about 250 fashion pieces from across four centuries. Many of the pieces were designed by the likes of Givenchy and Dior. Few, like an 1876 ball gown by Charles Frederick Worth, were too fragile and only displayed digitally.
