Christie’s upcoming July auction will be led by a rare manuscript focused on the legends of King Arthur, Merlin, and the quest for the Holy Grail.
The 13th-century work, known as the Clermont-Tonnerre Grail, is expected to sell for between £1.5 million and £2 million at the Valuable Books and Manuscripts auction. The illuminated manuscript is one of only three examples of its kind known to remain in private hands. Around 200 other related manuscripts are held by libraries, museums, and other institutions. The text contains medieval accounts of Merlin’s origins, the adventures of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and the search for the Holy Grail, making it an important source for the study of Arthurian literature.
Interest in such manuscripts remains strong among collectors and scholars alike. A comparable work, the Rochefoucauld Grail, sold at auction in 2010 for £2.3 million. According to Christie’s, the manuscript continues to hold both historical and literary significance centuries after it was created.
The sale has also renewed discussions about the role of public institutions in preserving rare historical documents. Irene Fabry-Tehranchi, a specialist at Cambridge University Library, noted that manuscripts in private collections can be difficult for researchers to access. She expressed hope that the work might eventually enter a public collection, where it could be preserved and made available for future scholarship.

However, acquiring such works remains a challenge for many museums and libraries due to limited funding. As a result, historically significant manuscripts often compete for attention in the private market, where prices can exceed the budgets of cultural institutions. The upcoming sale will determine whether the Clermont-Tonnerre Grail remains in private hands or becomes accessible to a wider public audience.
